Tires: Tire balancing, wheel rotation, factory wheels

Question
I have a 2004 Silverado 2500 hd crew cab short bed. It has a noticeable shake driving at 55. I took it to a tire shop to have the tires balance and they told me the tires need to be match to the factory wheels. I did not understand this so he tried to explain some thing about the tires having high spots and need to be matched to the wheels. Do you no what this is? The truck has 30,733 miles on it. The tires look new. I bought it 3 days ago.

Answer
Vince,

The only thing I can guess is that the dealer is referring to the High Point marker that comes on new tires generally red or yellow in color.  This mark is to be aligned with the valve stem of the wheel when the tires are mounted new (heaviest point of force on the tire to the least point of force on the wheel).  If these marks are still visible they should be aligned.

It may be in your best interest to try another shop.  Today's balancers will, generally speaking, compensate for wheel rotation inside the tire.
