Tires: psi, mercury grand marquis, tire placard

Question
Please give me the correct psi for a Goodyear Viva 2 P215/70R15.  I have
two on the front of my 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis.  I have always kept
them around 34 or 35 psi but a service tech pointed out that 44 psi max is on
the side of the tire itself.  He inflated the tires to 40 psi and I'm afraid that I'm
going to have a blow-out.....

Answer
Angela,

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker – commonly called the tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

My book says that the placard on a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis says the original tire size is P215/70R15 97S and the inflation pressures of 30 psi front and 34 psi rear.  Please check your vehicle and see if the information is the same.

BTW, the tech apparrently pointed out the MAX pressure on the sidewall - but he couldn't point out what the RECOMMENDED pressure was, because it's not on the tire, it's on the vehicle.
