Tires: Correct Tires for Tandem Car Hauler, st205 75r15, tire diameter

Question
I bought a used tandem axel car hauler. It has 4 different brands of radial tires and at least two sizes! (can't see the other sizes because of how I parked it). The two known sizes are P235/60 and P215/65 on 15" rims. Need to haul Kia MiniVan at 4,800 lbs curb weight. Been told trailer is 1,200 lbs. One source says to use 8 or 10 ply bias. Another says he's seen a 10,000 lb trailer using 5 ply radials. I'm lost. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer
Charlie,

Let's assume your values are correct.

I'll skip all the math and tell you that an ST205/75R15 Load Range C has a diameter of 27.1" and a width of 8" and requires a rim width of 5" to 61/2" and uses 50 psi.

A P215/75R15 has a diameter of 27.7", a width of 8.5", requires a rim width of 51/2" to 7" and uses 35 psi.

Now it's time for you to measure your trailer.

How much room is there for tire diameter?  (Don't forget to include suspension travel!)

How much room is there for width?  (Don't forget to include room for swaying and cornering deflection!)

How wide are the rims and what is the capacity for both load and pressure (That should be stamped on the rim somewhere, maybe on the back side.

That should be enough info to start.

Post back if you need more help.
