Tires: dry rot, yokohama geolander hts, maintenance mechanic

Question
Bot new 11/26/2005 4 yokohama geolander hts p215/70r-16 tires...tire have 30k miles...maintenance mechanic today says they are dry rotting to the point that it is an issue.  Is this typical for this tire at this milage?

Answer
Glenn,

The factor here is not the mileage on the tires but, the age and element exposure of the tires.  Without having the DOT info to be specific I'm guessing the tires are 3 - 4 years old.  Based on the mileage you show this vehicle is not used very frequently and most likely is stored outside or exposed to the weather.  The condition your are seeing is Ozone cracking due to age and exposure.  This condition is inherent in ALL tire brands.

My advice is to replace the tires and arrange for sheltered storage for the vehicle.  Wish I had a more pleasant answer for you.
