Tires: Tire load rating, Extra Load Tires

Question
My wife and I had 4 tires on my 1999 suburban 1500 2 wheel drive vehicle. the tires are P235/75R15 with a 105S load and speed rating. I had an issue with the tires not looking right and brought this up to the company and they said the tires were correct even though the book they were using to match the tires said they should be a 108S load and speed rating.is this an acceptable variance in the tire ratings for this vehicle?

Answer
Bart,

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker commonly - called the vehicle placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

Find yours.  Notice the tire size shows the tire as an XL (Extra Load) and 105 is not an XL.  It's a SL (Standard Load) and 108's are XL's.  The SL / XL stuff will be printed on the sidewall.  BTW this all involves load carrying capacity - and load realted tire failures can sometimes have tragic results.

Show this to the tire shop and have them upgrade you at no charge.  Tell them if they don't, you will appear in court with this answer printed out and they better have a good answer for why they did what they did.
