Tires: Tires, coral rock, magic marker

Question
Most people scrape the sidewalls of their tires against a curb at one point or another.  Since I am meticulous about my F250, I try to avoid doing such things.  Alas I caught the corner of not a curb, but a piece of coral rock.  They're used a lot in Key Largo due to the abundance of coral.  Coral is much more coarse and sharp than rock or concrete and thus it cut a piece of the sidewall out.  It's cosmetic and not deep enough to be dangerous but it's showing a white layer that is apparently beneath the surface and looks aweful.  I'm not as concerned with filling the entire gouge as I am with simply covering up the white.  Will a black magic marker do or is there a product that will be more durable and look better when I apply tire-shine (as I always do when it's washed)?

Answer
Amanda,

First you should make absolutely sure the "white" is just rubber and there is no fabric involved.  If there is fabric, replace the tire.

If the white is just rubber, then use whatever works.  I'm guessing that magic marker won't work (not really sure), but there are some plastic / rubber paints avaialble that will probably work better.
