Tires: bolt pattern 02 M3 vs. 07 335i, wheel and tire package, winter wheel

Question
I put my 17" winter wheel and tire package from my bmw 2002 M3 on my 2007 335i coupe.  Wheels clear the brakes but notice a steering wheel shake, what is the likely cause is it not exact bolt pattern, too much lug nut torque, I used 90 lbs, or a bad belt in one of the tires, they were stored properly for two years.  Please advise.

Answer
Ed,

There are quite a few causes for steering wheel shake.  Obviously the change to the winter tires has to be considered an significant event.

You didn't mention when the shake occurs - and that's important for the diagnosis.  If the problem is only wheel end, then the shake will occur in the 50 to 70 mph range, and pretty much only there.  Let's assume that is the case.

If this is so, then we could be looking at imbalance - which could be corrected by balancing the tires - out of round - probably a flat spot from storage - or irregular wear - which will probably wear itself out.

OK, so I've given you a few things it might be.  If it turns out that the symptoms are different, then there are other things it could be.
