Tires: motorhome tires, motorhome tires, dual wheels

Question
I have a 1994 Southwind moter home with 8R x19.5 tires and I would like to put on a little wider tire like a 245 70R x 19.5. I know that the rims that I have are only 6" wide and the reason I was thinking about doing this was that I though that a wider tire would make handle better. would this be true? I have looked for rims at a few places but have not been able to find any that are 10 bolt pattern 7 " wide that are 10.9" center to center for the clearance for the dual wheels do they make a rim that will work for that and what do you think about putting wider tires on this?

Answer
Don,

I don't think going to a wider tire is going to appreciably change the handling of the vehicle.  There is jsut too much weight involved and the changes you are contemplating are relatively minor by comparison.

I think using a higher inflation pressure would have more effect.  So the question is - how much additional pressure can you put in those tires?  What is the pressure supposed to be?  and what is the maximum listed on the sidewall?

With the answers to those questions, you should be able to make a good decision on the pressure.

BTW, these tires can safely take 10 psi more than the maximum listed on the sidewall.  There's a long and complex explanation behind this and it is something that most folks don't know about.

Hope this helps.
