Tires: Mixing Brands, emergency maneuvers, chevy blazer

Question
I drive a 1999 Chevy Blazer. The car has Dunlop Rover Touring AT tires size P235/70R15.  If I replace both back tires do they still have to be dunlops?  Can I go with the exact same size but another brand? Will not having all four tires the same brand affect the steering?  Thanks

Answer
Howard,

If you have a 4X4, all the tires have to be the same and have the same amount of wear.  If they don't, when the 4X4 feature is activated, the tires will bind up the drivetrain and eventually ruin the transfer case (or a differential)

But if you don't have a 4X4, it's still a good idea to have 4 of the same with the same amount of wear.  Emergency maneuvers can become unpredictable when the tires are different, and the more different they are, the more likely this will happen.

Hope this helps.
