Tires: Noisy Tires what to look for, quiet tires, snow traction

Question
I would like to buy some tires and am wondering what to look for when it comes to noise comfort. I have noticed in the past on the same road surfaces some tires are noisy and some ar not. Is there something that I can look for which will help me pick out a good tire with a low noise level? Thanks

Answer
Ed,

Search through Tire Rack's ratings and I think you will find a pretty good answer about noise levels.  Just be aware that the pavement has an awful lot to do with the noise generation and that sometimes certain pavements will cause normally quiet tires to be noisy.

I would suggest you contact a local tire delaer and get his take on what works on the pavement in your area.

But as a general rule, staright ribbed, boring looking tires are quiet tires. You should also be aware that this sometimes compromises wet and snow traction.

Hope this helps.
