Tires: Choice of tyres, tyre specifications, potenza giii

Question
Thanks again for providing the link.
Apart from the looks, do you think that the Turanza ER-60 will match the performance of the LS-H?
So you recommend the Turanza ER-60 tars ;-) over the other two models of Potenza's?
Also, could you briefly explain what changes in ride quality or other, I might experience going for a 77H from the original 77T?

Thanks

Question -
Bridgestone it is then!
You're right about me being a foreigner from the tyre specifications I provided and also in the way we spell TYRE :-) I reside in India. And believe it or not, almost all vehicles on Indian roads have tubed tyres. I believe tubed tyres were discontinued in the US in the fifties, but for some reason, our cars still have them. I intend buying a new car and the one that I'm looking at, has S322 as the tyre model (again, tube type) and a size of 165/65R13 77T.
I was on the Bridgestone India website which assists you in finding the perfect tyre for your vehicle.
I have 3 options:
Potenza GIII(175/60R13 77H)
Potenza GIII(185/60R13 80H)
Turanza ER60(165/65R13 77H)

What would you recommend? I dont think I would consider myself an aggressive driver, but I love speed. Fuel Efficiency (FE) is also a priority.
Please advise and thanks Andrew, for all the info.

Question -
Hi Andrew,

I am in the process of having new tyres fitted to my car which has a standard tyre size of 165/65R13 77T.
I am in a dilemma choosing between Goodyear and Bridgestone. I have read that Bridgestone's deliver a sort of rough ride and also tend to be a little noisy at speeds over 100kmph, albeit they perform well in bad weather and bad road conditions. On the other hand, Goodyear's wear out way faster than 'stones.
I know that we're talking about two very credible brands, but I just want to be a 100% confident before making a decision. What would you advise.
Following are the Goodyear models that I'm looking into:
GT3, Ducaro GDi, Ducaro GA, Eagle Ventura, Eagle NCT 5 and the Eagle F1 GSD3.
Following are the Bridgestone models that I'm also looking into:
Potenza GIII(175/60R13 77H)
Potenza GIII(185/60R13 80H)
Turanza ER60(165/65R13 77H)

Also, could you briefly talk about upsizing and some advantages and disadvantages of opting for an upsize. Would you recommend it?
Clearly, I am very confused and would appreciate your insight on this subject.

Thank You.

Hello Jascha!

Okay, first of all its obvious that you are somewhere other than North America because of the type of tires you were talking about and the size....not common here, the tires you have listed are not available in North America except for special order but lets see if I can help!

First of all...both brands are great tires, but Goodyear is known for a hard ride compared to Bridgestone, but Bridgestone has a better ride and last longer and give better traction. In my opinion Bridgestone is the better tire of the two, but as far as ride goes Michelin is a softer ride that either, but I'll take Bridgestone performance any day...they are clearly the better tire. Look at F1 and Indy Car...Bridgestone/Firestone only! That has to say something.

Another thing to consider is the speed rating, you can find it in the service description i.e.  165/65/13  >>77T<<
The letter after the 77 is a "T" which means that your tire is rated at sustained speeds upto 118mph. Most of the tires you had listed are a "H" rating, which means that the tires can go upto 130mph. That in itself is going to give you a firmer/harsher ride because the sidewall is reinforced heavier to handle the added speed therefore decreasing the rebound in the tire, resulting in a firmer ride.

Your speed ratings are listed here
S= 112mph
T= 118mph
H= 130mph
v= up to 149mph
Z= over 149mph
W= up to 168mph

If possible stay with what you have, but going upto an "h" rating will give you better cornering/stability and higher speed, but be prepared for a little harsher ride no matter what tire you put on there.

As far as upsizing, generally what you gain by upsizing is higher speed capabilties, better cornering/handling, loss of smooth ride and sometimes more expensive choices. I would recommend the "H" if you are a somewhat "hard" driver and want better performance. But, if you aren't an agressive driver, most of the time its wasted money. Most people that do it have it done for better performance. Imagine this and i'll give it to you two ways..... a high profile truck or a car that is 5 inches off the ground, which one is going to take a corner at 50mph better? The car will because it has a lower center of gravity. Or can you turn better when walking in 3 inch heels or 1 inch heels....see the difference? A 165/65/13 is the same height as a 175/60/13, but the 175/60/13 is just a little wider therefore lower its center of gravity resulting in less movement of the sidewall giving you better handling.

I hope I have helped and if you need anything else please feel free to ask anytime!

Andrew ;)

p.s. no matter what you have don't forget to rotate the tires and check the alignment frequently.

Hey Again!

Okay....yeah the TYRE spelling kind of gave it away that your not exactly from one of the southern US states.   ;) LOL(im from down here so I can make fun of it...actually we pronounce them as tars!)

Anyway, enough of the having fun.....I went on their website and alot of the technology they have is the samething we have here maybe just named a little different. I really liked the look of the Turanza ER60...we have a tire or tyre(depending on location:) ) that is very close in apperance with the same technology and I must say I have the tire on my wifes Acura, we call the tire Turanza LS-H. Here is a link to a online wholesaler that allows customer to post their ratings of the tires they purchase and this link will send you right to this page
>>>>        http://www.tirerack.com/survey/SurveyComments.jsp?additionalComments=y&commentSt      <<<<<<

Now that tire appears to be close to the LS-H in looks and what is listed but this should give you somewhat of an idea.

As far as fuel efficency....keep your air pressure checked on a regular basis and keep the engine systems maintained to increase fuel economy. A 10% loss in air pressure and affect lower fuel economy around 5% or so. This is really the only thing tire related that will affect fuel economy.

anything else you need please let me know!

Andrew ;)

p.s. we use innertubes to float down rivers and creeks with in the summer for fun, so your telling me people actually put them on cars still?
Just kidding  :)   I know it still goes on even here still however limited.

Answer
No problem with the help, its what am I for. I do think the ER60 and the LS-H are very close and given everything I have read, I would put them on my own car. The difference between the potenza and the turanza brand is performace, the Potenza line is a pure high performance line and the Turanza is a Touring line of tire. If I had a Corvette or Porsche, I would use the Potenzas. On my Acura and Honda Accord like cars use the Turanzas.

Ride quality difference between H-rated and T-rated? Very minimal under normal usage. The H-rated sidewall is going to be slightly stiffer than a T-rated resulting in only a very slightly harder sidewall. The H-rated tire will corner better than the T-rated tire for the same reasons. Me personally.....use the H-rated tire! :)
