Tires: right tire load?, dodge ram 3500, small claims court

Question
Two weeks ago I purchased Michelin X Radial LT all-season 215/85R-16 load rated D tires for my 1998 Dodge Ram 3500 Quad Cab Dually Diesel truck from Costco. While travelling I stopped at another Costco to have my tire pressure tested as one tire appeared low. The service person told me I had the wrong load rated tire. I should have recieved load rated E tires instead of D. He suggested I return to the store where I purchesed the tires and ask for Es. Today that store told me that Ds were fine and the max load rating of the tires ( 2335 single and 2150 dual) x 6 was fine to handle the load. Who do I listen to? By the way, I frequently carry a well loaded 2400lb slide-in-camper and the original store serviceman was aware of this fact.
The GVW of the truck is 11,000 lbs and the front axle rating is 4850. The dodge info decal on the front door says E load rating.
Are the current D load rated tires safe or should we pursue a change to Es? Thankyou.

Answer
Graham,

The placard says Load Range E.  The government doesn't require this just because they like the way it looks.  It's there for a reason, and you've discovered the reason!

Have the tire shop where you bought the tires replaced them with Load Range E  at no expense to you (after all they made the mistake) and make sure you check before you leave the place that they have inflated the tires as per the placard.

If they say they won't do that, then tell them you'll file a small claims court action and then do it.  And while you are waiting for your court date, change out the tires at another place and that becomes the basis of your lawsuit.

Hope this helps.
