Tires: Wheel shimmy, chevy silverado 4x4, chevy silverado

Question
I have noticed lately when I drive between 35 to 45 mph. I get a shimmy in the steering wheel. since then I have had all the tires balanced.  And I still have the shimmy. I drive a 1992 Chevy Silverado 4x4 with M/T tires.

Answer
Chris,

There are a few possibilities here.

First, is that you may have developed irregular wear on the tires because the vehicle was misaligned.  The fix would be to get the vehicle aligned and hope to wear a different pattern into the tires (or get new ones)  BTW, I think that most published alignment tolerances are too wide by a factor of 2.  Meaning if the spec is 2 plus or minus 1, I think the allowable range should be 1 1/2 to 2 1/2.

Second is worn components - u-joints, ball joints, tie rod ends.  A good alignment shop ought to be able to tell what's what.

Hope this helps.
