Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: fit, kawasaki klr 250, suzuki dr200

Question
I'm 6'5" 300+lbs. I'm wondering what size bikes I should be looking to buy for a first time rider. I like both sports and cruisers.

Answer
Chris,

If you haven't taken the MSF Basic Rider Course yet, I highly suggest that you take advantage of that course both for the valuable training and the experience of riding a motorcycle. It is my experience that many new riders enter the riding class with the intention of buying a particular make or style of bike then after the weekend of riding realize a different bike would be better suited to them to gain experience on.

If you have taken the class I suggest that you visit several motorcycle dealers and trying out several size and styles. At 6'5" you will find some that are too cramped for a comfortable riding position. I always suggest starting out with a used motorcycle and one that is smaller in engine size. It will allow you to gain confidence and prepare you to move up to a larger motorcycle once you have confidence in your riding abilities.

A dual sport style bike is usually taller and has a higher seat height. There are some very affordable bikes in that genre that can make an excellent first motorcycle. Some models I suggest you try are the Suzuki DR200, DR400, Yamaha TW200, Kawasaki KLR 250. If you feel you can safely and confidently handle a larger displacement bike there are 650cc versions of the DR and KLR bikes.

It is impossible for me to determine the best bike for you without observing your riding ability and how well a particular motorcycle fits you. I suggest you try several of them but strongly suggest that you avoid buying a new motorcycle or one that is too large for you to ride confidently and gain valuable skill and experience.

I hope I have given you some direction to begin your search. Please feel free to check back with me. I am curious what you end up deciding to buy.

Thank you for the question. Good luck and ride safely.
