Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: 1983 Honda CM450E Seat, oem honda parts, honda cm450e

Question
While sprucing up my cycle for Spring riding, I noticed the seat appeared loose. In fact, the front end was shifting around. I noticed the entire seat is  not bolted down, and the front lip is not being "caught" under a lip near the gas tank.  I don't think it's original, and I don't see any clips or clasps.  How risky is it to ride a cycle with a loose seat? How would you recommend I procede?  Thanks.

Answer
I do not have a manual for your CM450 so I cannot check the original configuration. The loose seat can be dangerous to ride so I encourage you to find out as soon as possible whether a part is missing. One easy way to check is to locate an online dealer that sells OEM Honda parts. Many have a searchable online parts fiche. You can compare that to your bike.

One dealer who offers online search for parts is www.servicehonda.com. If you find that you need a part they may be able to assist locating one for you.

If the part is no longer available from a Honda dealer I have had good luck searching for parts on Ebay or other online sources. Also, sometimes Honda used the same part on several models and a dealers may be able to help you locate one that is matched to your bike.

I strongly recommend that you address the problem before riding the bike. It is important for you to be seated firmly on the solidly mounted seat to help assure that you have total control of the bike.

Good luck with your research. Please let me know how you make out and whether a part was missing and if you are able to locate one.
