Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: how to choose the right size motorcycle for me, bike selection, size bike

Question
How do I choose the right motorcycle for me? I am a new rider, almost 50 y.o., everyone seems to be saying get a 250, but my concern is I do not want to have to buy a new bike in 6 months, I would rather get something that will last...bike use mostly back and forth to work  (20 miles 1 way) I am about 5'6" 200lbs.

Answer
Ricky, your question addresses the most important considerations for making your bike selection. First, NEW RIDER - level of training and experience, level of confidence in riding ability. Second,AGE - physical condition, physical strength and physical limitations. Next, size - bike ergonomics - find a bike that fits you, go out and try some bikes on for size; When seated are both feet flat on ground? Can you comfortably reach and operate controls? Is riding position comfortable for intended use? Is seat comfortable? etc.
Next, USE - are you riding that 40 miles daily on street or highway and what about when you just want to ride for the fun of riding.
Choose wisely and ride safely.
