Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: best bike for kids, better bikes, pollution concerns

Question
I am buying two bikes for my boys, age 8 and 10, this Christmas.  I'm thinking of buying two used Yamaha PW80's, with the 2-stroke engine.  However, I've heard that 4-strokes are a better way to go.  The question is, can I get away with buying the 2-strokes this year and move up to some bigger and better bikes in a year or two, or start out with the 4-strokes now?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Chris,

Thanks for the question. I think the PW80 is going to be fine for now for both boys. Your 8-year old will take longer to grow out of it, of course. Your 10-year old will probably be ready for something bigger when he is 12, maybe sooner depending on how fast he develops his riding skills.

Right now, the off-road bike industry is in transition between 2-strokes and 4-strokes. 2-strokes are lighter and make more power than the same size 4-stroke engine, but the gap is closing rapidly. Pollution concerns and a shift towards more "torque" rather than top-end power (which 2-strokes are great at) is pushing the trend towards 4-stokes. It's a good thing really, as 4-strokes are easier to ride in some ways than 2-strokes, but when you are talking about bikes at the PW80 level, there's just no reason to jump right into the more-expensive 4-stroke machines.

For your boys, at this age and if they are new to riding, a pair of PW80's should be a perfect way to get them started. Teach them proper bike maintenance and watch their progress, and keep in mind you'll probably be upgrading one or both pretty soon if they decide they really like riding. If only we could grow the bikes to keep up with the kids.

Best to you and your family this Christmas season, and teach them to ride smart, with helmets and proper attire.
