Used Cars: Selling van..., chevy g20 van, bearer of bad news

Question
Hi Jay,
I'd like to ask about selling my brother's van and what I should expect in a price range. It is a 1984 Chevy G20 van with a 305 in it. It's pretty decent shape and nothing major, either mechanical or cosmetic. I've researched the big 3 used car value estimators(kbb, nada, edmunds, vmr), but am not getting much help because some do not go back to that year. Is there a way I can get a ballpark figure of what to ask for this when I list it? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it just aint worth a whole lot.  Even if it was super nice, the problem is there just isnt very many people wanting those older vans, or newer vans like that for what it is worth.  That van is worth as much as you can get for it.  If I was trading for that van I would figure it at about $300 to $500 trade in value, and before it was all said and done I would probably gladly take any offer over profit that I got.  You can ask $1995 for it, which is probably fair, but you are not going to get very many "serious" inquiries on it, so I would try not to price it out of reasonable, just to insure you sell it, instead of it becoming a piece sitting around the house or such.  So realistically, the van is worth about $300 to $800.  Just remember as  you read this that when talking about a vehicle like that it is not valued at how good it is, or how nice it is, it is all about marketability, and with gas like it is, and car lots offering better vehicles for less down payment, there just is not much of a market for it.
