Acura Repair: Oil light, faulty sensor, oil light

Question
I know you do acura, but honda expert is maxed out, so I was hoping you could help. My oil light came on yesterday and oil level is fine. Are there any other possibilities other than oil pump and do I have to raise engine to getv oil pan out? 1988 honda civic 1.5L. thxs

Answer
Hi Brent,

I do not know much about that car but I will try answering as best I can. Yes you need to raise your car to get to the oil pan, you could do it on jacks but it could get really messy and it is a lot harder, if you live in a big city there are sometimes bays that you could rent with lifts and on site mechanics for guidance, they are cheap to rent and worth it.

As for your oil light it is possible that it could be a faulty sensor. compare the prices of an oil pump and a sensor, the sensor might be 5 bucks and really easy to replace, it's not uncommon for a sensor to go on an older car.

Also how long have you been running the car with the oil light on? have you heard anything strange in the engine? is the heat rising really quickly? If the oilpump is working your engine will run just like it always does, if it cut out on you it is very likely that your cams and valves will start to make pinging noises due to the fact that oil has not reached them and they have overheated and are touching the pistons.

I'm sorry I can't be more help to you Brent, I will be seeing a good friend of mine who has been working on Honda's for over 30 years, I'll ask him and get back to you on it.

OK, so I spoke with my friend and he said that it could be that the wire on the sensor might be a little loose. It is one little cable going into the engine push that in it could be loose. If your oil is not low then it is your oil pressure so probably the oil pump. He told me that it might be better to just buy a new engine then to try and get an oil pump for your car, he says that you can find an engine for that car for a very good price (just a thought). If there is anything else don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks,
Daniel
