Question
hi, i bought myself a Suzuki gsf600 Bandit when i was 17 and i just turned 18 in September. unfortunately last week i writ off my bike so im looking for a car next. i want to buy a nice car that everyone will like, i looked at Nissan skylines and muscle cars buy for my age the insurance is to high, and plus ive had an accident so my insurance is higher. So what do you think would be a good first car for me? it has to look nice though

Answer
Well lets see, your 18... you don't need to be 15-20,000 in debt at 18.... you dont need to be in debt at all... when I was 18 i bought myself a 1994 Corvette... cost me 12,500 dollars... but i had been saving since before highschool and paid cash... I know what it's like to want a nice looking car, show off for the ladies, etc.. especially since i'm not much older than you... skylines are a joke, you shouldn't even look at them... amazing machines but almost impossible to legally drive over here(unless you aren't in the USA? if you arent.. are you referring to skylines or the skyline GT-R? big difference in car..) (without connections, or paying the ~20,000 dollar a year fee's associated with doing it legally)... older corvettes are fun but be ready to have to lowest quality interior of any car... all GM sports cars for that matter... poor build quality but they look good and the engines are awesome... muscle cars are a bad choice if you aren't loaded.. always having to fix something... have another car... To be honest the best car you could get is whatever you can pay cash for, or finance as little as possible... usually a civic, something that will last you until you have a bigger income... but if you're anything like me and have to have something fast (or nice... i just wanted something fast) go with what u can afford used, keep yourself out of debt.. :mustangs, firebirds/camaros, 1995-up BMW's, integras, rsx's, corvettes, (stay away from rx-7s unless you know how to work on rotary's yourself... they are VERY high maintenance)... 3000gt's, 300zx's, 240sx's, MR2's, etc... All are decently reliable and nice looking cars... just remember, if you go for looks and perfomance you will always pay the price later in repair and reliability... when a corvette breaks, it costs alot.. when a BMW breaks... costs even more... etc... also the same cars will have much higher miles than a simple honda/toyota in similar price range... figure out how much you want to spend... realistically.. you are 18.. it wont be your last car... i've had 5... i'm only a few yrs older... i am actually selling my modded 5.0 mustang for a civic, and bought a bike to suffice my need for speed, the faster a car is the more things will go wrong... costing me too much to keep her running...  anyways... figure out what u can afford without going into (or as little as possible) debt.. write back with a figure... i'll be able to help more with a price range... get back with me.
