Trucking: Load Brokerage company in Canada, load brokerage, brokerage company

Question
QUESTION: Hello, we are a Load Brokerage Company in Ontario, Canada.
Do I need to have MC#, Surety bond & other FMCSA requiremnets to book freight with my US clients or if my Canadian based clients want to move freight to US?

Thanks,
Honey

ANSWER: Only if you are booking cross border freight of freight moving wholly within the US.
If you are booking intra-Canada freight and just billing clients in the US you should not need USDOT registration, although some shippers may require it as a policy of doing business.

QUESTION: Hello,

I appreciate your prompt reply. I am still little confused so I am writing 2 scenarios & would like to have your expert advice on it:

Scenario 1: my shipper/client is US based & would like me to book his freight to move into Canada.

Scenario: my shipper/client is Canada based & would like me to book his freight to move to USA

Based on the above situations, please advice if I still need to register with FMCSA or any other US authorities?

Many Thanks
Honey

Answer
In those cases you would need to be licensed by FMCSA as a property broker, because you are arranging transportation in the United States even if starts or ends outside the country.

Getting brokerage authority is not hard though, just follow the steps on their website.
