Trucking: trucking age laws, cdl drivers, class a cdl license

Question
I started my owned trucking company straight truck ford 250 I am pulling a trailer that holds 3 cars at one time. I am 18 years old. Can I go out of my state or only in my state? Do I need to stop at the weighing stations?

Answer
Hi Jimmy,

Age only affects CDL licensed drivers. You must be 21 to travel from state to state, but some states will allow you to drive at 18 within you home state. Since you are hauling to make money, your vehicle is considered to be a commercial motor vehicle. You are required to do everything a truck driver does except hold a CDL drivers license. If the GVWR of the truck and the GVWR of the trailer add to 26,001 lbs. or more, you will be required to have a class A CDL license. You also must pass through ever weigh station just like a tractor trailer. I don't think the combination you have requires CDLs, but you better check to be sure. As long as you don't need CDLs, you can cross state lines.

I hope this helps.
