Trucking: how to start, luck jim, variable costs

Question
hi, i am in driving school and should get my cdl- A license in 2 weeks. i used to invest in real estate but now with the market going down i figured it's time to change career. my question is where shall i start? is it better to join a company as driver? any companies u recommend to start with? what shall i look for with my first company? or shall i be an owner operator to get quicker money? thank u

Answer
Ashraf, I suggest starting as a company driver to get a couple of years of safe driving experience and make sure it's what you want to do.
Being an Owner Operator requires not only the investment in equipment but a good business sense to understand fixed and variable costs and the discipline to set aside reserves for the inconvenient  breakdown or accident.  As an OO you are in your own business so you only earn money when you are hauling freight.  No vacation pay or sick days. If you invested in Real Estate you know at least something about business so once you learn the business on someone else's dime you may then think about the pros and cons of the OO life.

Best of luck.
Jim.
