My wife and I are considering a career in trucking.  Can you recommend any information sources?  A friend told us that expediting is the way to go; what do you think?

Jim, I think this is an excellent way to start. You can start with any size truck and then decide if you want to go bigger or smaller.  It also will give you the experience and possibly connections to move on to other opportunities. Try these two sites for general information:
