Answer
Hi Mike.

Hot Shots are given to the name of any rig under a Class 8 truck that are single axle.  Pickup trucks are very popular, but with most loads, you'll need a dually diesel truck.  You'll need to invest in a trailer, most likely, and loads vary.  Some hot shots pull cars, guys in Texas haul a lot of oil field equipment, while others haul anything from hot tubs to campers.  Visit www.expeditorsonline.com for more information.  I've answered a ton of questions on hot shots, so look at some of my previous answers too.

The best way to learn is to ask local hot shot drivers.  Find out what they haul, for who, if their leased out, what the pay is, etc.  Most drivers will help you out.

Good luck!
