Trucking: Information, independent drivers association, transportation intermediaries association

Question
Hi Bob,

I have just started a freight brokering company. I have no prior experience in the industry. What associations do you recommend I join? Also, can you direct me to any useful resources online and offline that I should know about?

Thanks,

Isidro

Answer
Hi Isidro,

I assume you are licensed with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration).  If not, that should be first.

Most brokers carry contingent cargo insurance to pay shipper loss or damage claims if the carrier and its insurance company refuse to pay. Contingent cargo coverage provides shippers a second level of protection, as long as a claim is valid. You should be carrying liability insurance as well as 'errors and omissions' insurance.

Licensed property brokers who belong to the industry trade group Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) are required to abide by a strict code of ethics when dealing with shippers and carriers. You should look into this,  www.tianet.org.  Also look into www.nitl.org.

I would also join Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (www.ooida.com).  This is a great organization that will give you some invaluable insight in the trucking industry.  They also have a load board where you can list your loads.

I use to get a lot of loads off of www.getloaded.com.  Some brokers were great and some a real pain.  My biggest problem with so many brokers (besides slow pay) is action.  If I'm sitting at a dock and I can haul 44,000 lbs and the shipper is trying to load 46,000 lbs., I need the broker to step in.  I've had brokers that it's impossible to get a hold of while I'm at the dock with this problem.  Needless to say, I never use them again.  Sometimes, I half to pull away empty and call another broker for a load.  Make yourself easy to access for drivers.

Likewise, you'll find drivers (and companies) that are great and you never have to worry about any issues (damage, being late, etc.).  Those are the guys who will make you look great and put money in your wallet.  Keep them happy, pay fast, if a load is messed up, find another ASAP for them and they will be a great asset to your business!

Good luck!
