Trucking: brokerage, cargo brokers, trucking companies

Question
My husband is going to be an owner operator and I want to become a broker.  Do I need to go to school and be licensed?  The broker he uses now told him that you don't have to get a license or anything.  What is the best way for me to get started?  I know that some of these companies are just a rip off.  Which one would you suggest?  How do we get started?

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Yes Carietta, you do need a license to legally act as a broker.  I don't know any shippers or reputable trucking companies who will deal with an un-licensed broker.
There are books and courses avaialble from a number of sources but I can not vouch for any of them.
I suggest you start with the industry trade association: http://www.tianet.org/
Also check FMCSA website for registration requirements.
"Broker: ...a company that arranges for the truck transportation of cargo belonging to others, utilizing for-hire carriers to provide the actual truck transportation. However, the Broker does not assume responsibility for the cargo and usually does not take possession of the cargo. Brokers must register with FMCSA by filing a Form OP-1.

That should get you started.  Good luck.
Jim.
