Trucking: Hauling Diesel, risk management section, csx locomotives

Question
Hi Tracy,
Having a few years experience driving "dry vans" over the road, I am thinking about applying for a local position driving a tanker hauling diesel fuel for CSX locomotives.
Is hauling diesel fuel somewhat safer than transporting gasoline. I am a little fearful of the flammability of gasoline.
 Thanks for any advise.

Answer
Dear Mike,

Both diesel and gasoline are Class 3 Flammables and you will display that placard on both types of loads. I have not found any information that would suggest that one is "safer" than the other from a transportation stand-point.  However, it is true that diesel fuel is a lower volatility fuel than gasoline. But, both are flammable and both will ignite and can explode depending on the circumstances and conditions.  There have been accidents involving both types of fuels and both types have had fatalities (once again dependent on many factors). Bottom line...one is not necessarily "safer" than the other.

I would suggest that you look at the US DOT Hazardous Materials web site ( http://hazmat.dot.gov ) for more information on the fuels and their transportation history.  There are some good case studies and a risk management section that may provide more information so that you can make your decision.

I wish you all the best in your endeavors, and keep in mind that safe and defensive driving is the best preventative action.

Best Regards,
Tracy
