Trucking: recovering abandoned bobtail truck, license tag, hi chris

Question
A 93 international conv. truck has been left in washington state since last year. the trailer is missing but a impound yard has the truck. they'll release the truck after payment is made for the tow & storage. We have the regesteration but all permits are missing and out of date. We are based in tennessee so the truck, which is driveable, will have to go through Wa, Id, Mt, Wy, Ne, Ia, Mo, and Tn, to Knoxville. How can we legally get this truck home? The trailer has been reported stolen. Are there some kind of recovery permit we can get to legally drive it home?

Answer
Hi Chris,  Sorry to hear of your misfortune.
I think you would need a current Tenn.license tag (IRP) that is registered with these states and a 2003 fuel permit (IFTA)from Tn. also with these states on application to prevent any trouble with the states involved on way back. Since you will be bobtail, you will not need Single State Registration. I am not fully familiar with Tenn. laws, since I live in S.C. but am sure this would be same.  Good Luck. Regards, J.P.
