Trucking: what is like OTR life?, otr driver, mail order

Question
Hi:
I'm undecided as to what to choose between local or 5-6 day a week driving and 2 days off rest and/OTR work.
I will like to combine working through the internet in a business like mail-order and such and truck driving;however I notice that for a soon to be a truck driving student most of the jobs are for OTR. IF I had no other choice but OTR, could I still have that second job working through my laptop and still be a OTR driver?
How are the hours? Will I have time let's say 2-3 hours each day to work after a long day driving?
Is that possible or am I kidding myself.
What is like to be an OTR driver?
Help me.
Thank YOU,
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,

Since you're still waiting to train, you'll more than likely not have much time, for the first 6-10 weeks you are on the road. After you've taken your classes, and passed your exams, and get hired, you will be with a trainer for about 8 weeks. After that you'll be on your own to drive. Your time on the road will be spent mostly with driving and resting. You'll have some free time for meals and to maybe do something at a truckstop. But, otherwise most of your time will be spent driving. In 9 out of 10 cases, the only jobs right out of school, are only OTR jobs. Not much local work, really. Most local companies are looking for drivers with experience, 3yrs or more.

Hope this helps,

Kevin
