Truck Repair: 2000 cummings 5.9 vp44 pump, planty, steep hill

I was climing a steep hill with a trailer planty of power and ran out of fuil [quater tank] cod p1688 came up I replace the feed pump primed it, the fires but wont start What went wrong in side the vp44 injection pump to make the pump fail that fast so I have to replace it. Truck only has 73000 mls

That code is Fault 374 for internal failure in the VP44 pump.The only way to fix it is to replace the pump.I would suggest getting it at a Cummins distributor because that will be a sure way to get the lastest updated pump & possible better warranty.
