Truck Repair: 2000 Cummins N-14 Head Gasket, head gasket, head gaskets

Question
Cliff, I just had the head gasket replaced on the middle head (#3&4) in my N-14. Now the driver is telling me that the head gasket is leaking, and a mechanic told him told him that it is the middle head, and all 3 heads have to come off to fix it. I didn't think there were any head gaskets that ran the entire lenghth of the block but that seems to be what they are saying. Last month I replaced the rear head gasket out in Arizona, and when they got it off they said the liners had dropped, and they had to put new cylinder kits in it. Do you think I'll have to go through all that again, or should the place that replaced the # 3&4 head gasket take care of it?

Answer
Actually Cummins makes a 0.002 shim to put on top of the liner to keep from doing all that work of replacing the liner shims under the liner. And NO,there are 3 head gaskets. We usually try to talk them into pulling all 3 at one time because if one failed, the others are not far behind.I would just fix the one & do the frt head too since they have to take the rocker housing off anyway.
