Truck Repair: Question #2, high gears, engine brakes

Question
-------------------------
Would this cause hard starting also? Sometimes it takes up to 2 minutes to start. We have also taken out the ball valves on the tanks and did the check valves, all hoses seem to be ok, but it still has to be cranked for a long time before catching. Also, when this sputtering occurs under pull, if we take our foot off the accelerator and reapply pressure, it catches and pulls fine. How difficult is it to check for broken injector springs on the N14, and if the injector timing needs to be set, I'm assuming that it needs to be done at a dealer?

Thanks for all your help, by the way!
Laura

We have a 1996 Freightliner FL120 with a Cummins Celect 500 N14. The problem we're having is under load, it feels as though it's sucking air and vibrates and sputters when pulling, almost like a miss. This was happening only when gearing down, but now happens in high gears as well. We've replaced the fuel lines, timing sensor, and #3 injector so far, but no go. Sometimes the fuel pressure goes down, and there is no turbo. We have no codes showing, either. Also, on a long pull the engine temp went way up and alarm went off, but no shutdown occurred. We were thinking injector problem, or ECM, but could it be anything else in your opinion?
Answer -
It is probably an injector misfiring under a load. That is not uncommon, just some
times hard to pin point which one it is.

Answer
If it does not have engine brakes, just take the rocker covers off to check springs.Injector timing is set with the camfollower gaskets & does not need adjustment. They do sell a check valve to go into the ECM cooling plate on the top frt fitting(straight or 90 degree). Also need to be using a FS1000 fuel filter. It has a metal pipe made into the filter 3/4 the way down. Some after market filters have them also. They make a shorter one if clearance is a problem. It is a FS1001.It sputtering, might have some one check fuel pressure while starting & fuel restriction while running.10" HG max on restriction & around 150 PSI on the fuel pressure running.
