Truck Repair: Cummins cracked block 53 casting, cant remeber, dodge 2500

Question
I own a 99 Dodge 2500 with a Cummins 53 cast block.  I had it in the shop various times for routine maintenance and often mentioned a smell coming from the drivers side that smelled like the engine was hot (coolant).  This was right from the start with this vehicle (purchased new).  Now that it is over 5yrs and 100,000 miles suddenly they diagnose a cracked block.  I am going in to see the dealer and would like more history on this casting flaw.  When did Cummins change blocks?  Are they aware of the flaw?  Have they replaced/repaired 53 series blocks for anyone after the 100,000 mi 5 yr warranty period?
Thank you!

Answer
The block on the 6B engine are all the same no matter the application.Yes they are aware there was a flaw & have redesigned it.They crack around #5 cyl right under the freeze plugs.A new block is around $1100 for just the block,no gaskets, bearings,or rings.I would check & see if you could get some warranty help anyways. We change a few every year in all types of vehicles.I cant remeber when they changed the block design.I dont know about the warranty part since Im just a tech.
