Vintage Cars: VW car alarm, jetta wolfsburg edition, dashboard lights

Question
hi,
the alarm on my '99 jetta wolfsburg edition seems to have been triggered and now the car won't start. every time i try to put the key in the ignition, all the dashboard lights come on (as usual), but then nothing happens. When i take the key out of the ignition the car alarm goes off and all the doors lock. This happens over and over again. I've read heaps of blogs on this question but the only answer has been take it to a mechanic.

Answer
You may already know this but this is an issue with the early Jetta’s.  You can try to take it apart and reflow the solder joints, but that is a tedious task.  I have successfully done this on some MB electronics.  In the old MB’s we just disconnect the alarm.
Unfortunately  a  VW service department may be your only choice.  Perhaps you could call one, its common, and perhaps they have a cure ???    Have you tried disconnecting alarm  and then disconnecting battery for 5 minutes.  Reattach battery cable and not the alarm.  May be worth a try
Sorry I could not be of more help, this is a great website for VW, have you tried there?
