Vintage Cars: shift boot, hemmings motor news, ford mustang

Question
Hello my name is Anthony and I am currently restoring a 1965 Ford Mustang with a 4-speed transmission. I have tried countless times to figure out how to replace the shift boot without success! I have tried taking off the t-handle with no success and I have also taken off the entire shaft but the hole in the top of the shift boot does not fit! If you could please tell me how I am suppose to go about doing this i would appreciate it! Thanks!

Answer
The t-handle should come off, usually they just unscrew, but some of them have a set screw or a nut that holds them tight.

The boot, is sometimes just screwed to the tunnel with a metal ring, but if it is part of a console, then you must take some of the console apart.  Often it isn't obvious how they come apart if you haven't done it before.

You should buy a Mustang Body manual for your car (and the mechancal manual) if you don't have one.  These are not that expensive and should be reproduced or you can find originals on e-bay or in Hemmings Motor News.  (www.hemmings.com)
