Vintage Cars: 64 Pontiac Laurentian 230 6 cyl., pontiac laurentian, lack of circulation

Question
Hi Don
I'm hoping you can answer a couple more questions about this old bird?
1.I cant solve my overheating problem.I tried a shroud which helps a bit,but my next guess is the water pump.Where will I find the water pump? I dont see anything on the hoses,or anything besides the alternator on the belt.
2.I am having electrical problems-I am on my second alternator.
There is a cylindical object bolted to the passengers side of the block with a wire that goes in the top-what is that? Also, two other larger 'things' behind and below that???
Thanks for the help!

Answer
Barry,

The water pump is right on the front of the engine, it HAS to have a pully on it with the fan attached right to the shaft/pully.  I don't see you you can miss it.

Also, the lower radiator hose will be attached to it, and I think one of the heater hoses.

It could be that the fins on the pump itself are corroded and causing a lack of circulation, or maybe the pump is plugged up.  You could also have debris built up inside the water jacket.  You might try removing some of the freeze plugs and seeing if you can flush out the block that way.

Make sure that the hoses aren't soft and collapsing under running conditions.  The lower hose and maybe the top hose should have a wire stiffener in side it to prevent this.  These will quite often rust away if the coolant isn't changed regularly.

As for the electrical thing, the first thing that came to mind is a condenser.  These are usually used to prevent electrical interference to the radio.  They should be replaced from time to time.  There will be one inside the distributor also, replace it anytime you replace the points.  These are about 3/4 inch in diameter, and maybe 2" long with one wire coming out one end.

The other two things are impossible to determine without a picture or something.  if you can  take a picture and place it on a public web site or host, give me the link and I will take a look.
