Vintage Cars: 1962 Chevy, small block chevy, edelbrock carburetor

Question
I have a 1962 Chevy Bel Air and I want to replace the 235 ci with a 327 and a hydromatric 350.  The 327 that I have is a 1962 block with a four barrel manifold.  there are 4 equal diameter holes for the carb.
question:  what type of carb can I use and what cfm would be the best.  All I will be doing is daily driving.

Thanks
John

Answer
Sounds like you have a square bore carburetor, but there are all sorts of adapters.

Depending on your intended use (just crusing, or drag racing, you say just daily driving) you might want a different carb.  I would recommend you consider an Edelbrock carburetor.  These are a modern version of the AFB that was an optional carb on the 327 you have.  Your engine was probably the 250 hp version which used, I think, the Carter square bore carb, the 300 hp version used the AFB.

The AFB is nice because it has smaller primary bores for good cruising mpg, and big secondary bores for good hp when you need it.  Also there are lots of optional jets and things to tune it exactly to your needs.

Try contacting a company like Summit.

They sell both carbs and manifolds.  There are adapters so you can use the AFB with your 327.  You will need to tell them what kind of cam you will be using too.  Stock grind or something else.  They can help you with that.  Get everything so it will work together.  You might consider buying a modern aluminum manifold to go with your new carb.  You can paint it Chevy orange if you want the stock look, or the aluminum looks nice in a slightly modded car.

The 327 is one of my favorite small block chevy sizes.  Wasn't made for that many years, but it is a good compromise between the high/quick reving 283 and the slower reving but better torque of the all-mighty 350.
