Rules for Merging Onto Freeways

It is always crucial to consider the traffic laws when traveling on the freeway. The laws were mandated for driver safety. Many drivers may not completely understand the rules for merging onto freeways. Always execute merging into traffic in a vigilant manner with a solid understanding of the freeway merging regulations.

Use Your Turn Signal

  • Whenever you are exiting the off ramp and entering the freeway, you must promptly display your turn signal. In most cases, you are merging from the off ramp left onto the freeway. However, several freeways require merging to the right. The turn signal alerts oncoming traffic that you are entering the freeway.

Enter the Freeway at an Appropriate Speed

  • As you approach the freeway, you must travel at a comparable speed to oncoming traffic on the freeway. Allow a gap of approximately four seconds to the subsequent oncoming car to avoid sudden braking and to allow a comfortable distance between you and the following car. If you must cross over to more than one lane on the freeway, do so in a careful manner when the desired lane is completely clear and there is sufficient space. You must not cross over more than one lane at a time during your merge.

Oncoming Traffic Has the Right-of-Way

  • The oncoming traffic on the freeway has the right-of-way, so you must yield if there is not sufficient space for you to merge in a safe manner. Always avoid forcing your way onto the freeway or cutting off another driver. Avoid riding on the shoulder of the road if possible. Using your mirror will assist you in knowing your surroundings and the space between traffic.

Don't Stop at Entrances and Exits

  • Avoid stopping at the exit of the off ramp or the entrance of the freeway. Coming to a complete stop blocks the exit to the off ramp and the entrance to the freeway. In some cases, you can't avoid stopping, such as when traffic is backed up due to an accident or traffic congestion. In other cases, your car may have a mechanical issue; if so, you must display your hazard lights.
