Defensive driving can make you a better driver. It focuses on good daily driving habits. Defensive driving is something everyone can learn how to do. According to statistics, it's something everyone should learn how to do in order to be safe on the roads.

Basic Definition

  • Defensive driving is a way of driving your car that helps you avoid collisions and accidents regardless of the conditions and/or the actions of drivers around you.

Features

  • Defensive driving goes beyond the laws of the road: courses cover the laws of physics as they apply to moving vehicles, and analyzing driving choices and their consequences.

History

  • The term was taken from the National Safety Council's driving course, launched in 1964, that was based on information from professional drivers.

Class Options

  • While many companies--online and off--that claim to teach defensive driving, there's no reason not to simply take the class through the National Safety Council. They have online courses, DVD courses and training center courses (see Resources).
