How to Remove the Hub Bearing on a Dodge 4X4

The hub bearing on a Dodge 4x4 truck allows the front rotors to spin on the front spindles. These bearings cam stick or freeze, and if they do, then the front wheel could potentially lock up and cause an accident. Before this happens, one way to fix the issue is to take apart the front end, then remove the hub bearings. This way you can replace the old bearing with a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Heavy-duty bungee cord
  • Seal puller
  • 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Cotter pin puller
  • Park the Dodge and set the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels with the tire iron. Pick up the front end with the jack and put jack stands under the frame. Take the wheels off with a tire iron.

  • Take off the brake caliper and the brake caliper anchor bracket from the spindle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Take the caliper off the spindle and hang it by the heavy-duty bungee cord on a stable part of the front end.

  • Pull off the dust cap on the center of the rotor. Pull out the cotter pin using the cotter pin puller, then unbolt the nut lock from the spindle using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Pull the rotor off of the spindle and place it on its face. Remove the rear wheel seal using the seal puller. Turn the rotor over so the bearings can fall out of the rotor.
