Jeep Tune Up Specifications

A basic auto tune-up will keep a vehicle running smoothly. Even if your Jeep doesn't exhibit obvious signs of wear or malfunction, tuning it up may boost performance and prevent malfunction down the road (literally!) A tuneup is recommended for every 35,000 to 60,000 miles of driving.

Throttle Bore

  • Over time, the vehicle's air intake system will get clogged with contaminants (a condition called "coking") and may lead to engine stalling and bad gas mileage. Open the throttle bore and clean it with towel and chemical auto cleaner or rubbing alcohol.

Filters

  • When tuning up your Jeep, install new filters. Using the Jeep in strenuous, dusty or off-road conditions will require more frequent replacement of filters. Fuel filters, which are part of the fuel injection system, can last up to 25,000 miles. Air filters and oil filters will last approximately 3,000 miles. It's also a good idea to change the oil (especially if it is dark in color) during a tune-up.

Spark Plugs and Wires

  • The spark plugs and spark plug wires represent an important component of engine function. Old or damaged plugs or wires will adversely affect engine performance. Always change the spark plug wires when performing a tune-up. Examine the spark plugs for signs of damage or wear to see if they require replacement as well.

Distributor Cap

  • Changing the distributor cap will also bolster engine performance. The distributor cap channels the ignition spark from the ignition coil into the individual spark plugs as it turns inside the ignition distributor.
