How to Remove Front Wheel Hubs in the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

The front hub assembly on a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport locks the front wheels to the axle to put the vehicle into four wheel drive mode. These hubs can wear down over time, and if they do, then they could freeze while moving which could cause an accident. To prevent this, you can replace the hubs on your SUV. But first, you have to remove the original front wheel hubs.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Snap ring pliers
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Lift the front of the Montero using the jack and put jack stands underneath the chassis. Take off the front wheels using the tire iron and move them out of the way.

  • Take off the hub cover with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Remove the snap ring underneath the hub cover using the snap ring pliers. Take out the shim and drive flange as well.

  • Unbolt the brake caliper from the front knuckle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and place the caliper on top of the suspension. Unbolt the speed sensor from the knuckle with the ratchet and then remove the rotor using the Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Unbolt the lock nut and lock washer from the front hub using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the front hub assembly off of the front suspension.
