How to Remove a 4.3L Power Steering Pump Pulley

The 4.3-liter engine has been a popular engine for Chevrolet since the mid 1980s, when it was introduced. The engine has appeared in the Chevrolet Astro van, Chevrolet S-10 pickup, and Silverado full-size trucks, as well as on overseas variants. These engines have a power steering pump mounted on the lower driver's side portion of the engine that gives hydraulic assistance to the steering system. If you need to replace the pump, the pulley will have to be removed.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-inch breaker bar and sockets
  • GM puller tool J-25034
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Pop the hood. Locate the belt tensioner on the left side of the engine block. Turn the tensioner counter-clockwise using the breaker bar and sockets, then pull the belt off the power steering pump.

  • Attach GM puller tool J-25034 onto the face of the steering wheel pulley so the center of the tool is in the center of the pulley.

  • Tighten down the puller tool J-25034 using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket until the tool pulls the pulley off the power steering pump. Detach the puller tool from the pulley using the ratchet.
