How to Change the Air Filter of a Honda Civic

The Honda Civic air filter protects the engine from dust and dirt that can enter the engine through the intake system. Change the air filter on the Civic every 15,000 miles so that the engine runs smoothly and efficiently. A dirty and clogged filter will restrict the air flow and affect your engine's performance. Purchase the correct air filter for the specific year Honda Civic on which you are working.

Things You'll Need

  • Correct Honda Civic air filter
  • Rag
  • Purchase the air filter from a automotive store or from the Honda dealer. If ordering online from a parts dealer, you need the year and engine size to get the correct air filter.

  • Turn off the engine and allow cooling for 15 minutes before touching the engine compartment. Open the hood.

  • Locate the air filter compartment on the driver’s side of the engine. The compartment is square, with four clips holding the cover onto the bottom compartment tray.

  • Lift up on the four clips with your fingers. Remove the cover. Remove the old air filter. Use a rag to wipe out any dust and debris in the bottom compartment tray.

  • Place the new air filter inside the bottom tray with the rim down. Position the filter so it sits in the tray flush with the lip of the bottom tray. Place the cover on the compartment and snap the clips down to secure the cover.
