How to Replace a Battery in a 2002 Lincoln LS

The battery in your 2002 Lincoln LS is responsible for storing the electricity created by the alternator, and then releasing that energy when it's called upon. Its most important job is providing power to the starter motor, which gets the car started when the engine is turned off. When the battery dies, you'll need a jump-start from another car to start the motor, which will give you just enough charge to get to an auto-parts store to replace the battery. This process should take 15 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Replacement battery
  • Open up the trunk and remove the contents. Lift up the spare-tire cover on the floor of the trunk to expose the battery. Unbolt the battery tie-down on the battery using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Follow that with the positive terminal in the same manner. Pull the battery out of the trunk.

  • Set the replacement battery into the trunk and bolt in the tie-down using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Connect the positive terminal on the battery using the ratchet. Then connect the negative terminal using the same tool.
