How to Take Out ABS Wheel Sensors on a Ford Windstar

On a Ford Windstar, the brakes are equipped with an anti-lock braking system that automatically pumps the brakes in case of an emergency. For this system to work properly, there are speed sensors located at the wheels which engage the brakes based on the data it collects from the gears around the axles. If those sensors go out, they need to be removed and then replaced so the ABS can work properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Raise up the front of the vehicle using the jack and set it on the jack stands. Make sure that the vehicle is solidly on the stands before crawling underneath it. Take off the front wheels using the tire iron and set them out of the workspace.

  • Locate the wheel speed sensor on the axle. It has a harness running into it and is just behind the outer CV boot, next to a gear on the shaft. Disconnect the wiring from the speed sensor, and remove the wiring from the mounts using your hands.

  • Unbolt the speed sensor from the mount and pull it away from the vehicle.
