How to Remove a Mustang Starter

If you need to remove the starter from your Ford Mustang to replace it, have it tested or rebuilt, you can do it in the garage or driveway at home with just a few tools. The starter motor is responsible for turning the engine over to build compression in the cylinders and start the engine. If it is not working or is dragging and not turning the engine over fast enough, the engine will not start. You can buy a replacement starter at most auto parts stores, and most will test the old one for free if you bring it in.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wrench set
  • Socket set
  • Remove the negative battery cable from the battery before starting any work on the electrical system. Use a wrench to remove the retaining bolt on the cable end and set the cable aside.

  • Position a jack under the front of the car and support it on a set of jack stands. Make sure the car is on a flat and firm surface before jacking the car up.

  • Locate the starter under the car. It is on the passenger's side of the engine and bolts to the bell housing of the transmission. Remove the nut on the back of the solenoid that retains the battery wire to the solenoid and slide the wire off the stud.

  • Unplug the switched power connector on the back of the solenoid by releasing the locking tab and pulling the connector out of the solenoid. You can leave the two wires hanging for now.

  • Remove the lower mounting bolt from the starter then remove the upper mounting bolt with a socket and ratchet. Carefully guide the starter out of the hole in the bell housing and lower it from the engine compartment.

  • Support the front of the car with a jack, remove the jack stands then lower the car to the ground.
