How to Clear Coat Fiberglass

Fiberglass is used on many vehicles and on some body panels of trucks. Many high-end sports cars have full fiberglass body panels and spoilers. Trucks with dually beds or step-side beds use fiberglass for the sides of the beds. When these fiberglass body panels are damaged, the repair process is different than with sheet metal repairs. The clear coat painting process is also slightly different, but can be done by using material from an auto parts store.

Things You'll Need

  • 1200 grit sandpaper
  • Water
  • Wax and grease remover
  • Rag
  • Clear coat paint
  • Sand the fiberglass surface with 1200 grit sandpaper and water. Keep the sandpaper flat against the surface and completely soaked with water while sanding. This can be done on top of a base coat of paint. Using high grit sandpaper will leave an extremely smooth surface without damaging the paint. Rinse the fiberglass and let it dry completely.

  • Wipe the entire area with a rag and wax and grease remover. This removes dust, wax and grease particles that can be detrimental to the finished clear coat once it dries. The wax and grease remover evaporates quickly and doesn't need to be cleaned off.

  • Spray three to four thin coats of clear coat paint on the fiberglass. Wait five minutes between each coat. Hold the sprayer 6 to 8 inches from the surface and use left-to-right strokes. Wait a full day before handling the surface, or fingerprints might end up in the dried finish of the clear coat.
