The 2005 Chevrolet Colorado replaced the Chevy S-10 model. The two trucks were sold side by side before the S-10 was canceled for the 2005 model year. The Colorado comes with either a 2.8 liter V-4 that makes 175-horsepower, and the 220-horsepower 3.5 liter 5-cylinder. Both engines are in the Vortec class that General Motors produces. Checking the on-board-diagnostics (OBD) codes on the Chevy Colorado is a relatively simple process, which should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete.
Sit in the driver's seat of your Colorado. Plug the OBDII scanner into the OBDII-USB port that is located underneath the dash on the driver's side of the truck.
Turn the ignition key on to the "accessories" position, without starting the truck. The accessories position is the second position on your ignition lock that lights up all of the dashboard lights.
Turn the power on to the OBDII scanner unit. Press the "READ" button, once the unit is done booting. The scanner will say "Communicating with vehicle" if the scanner is hooked up properly.
Write down the code(s) that the scanner gives to you along with any other pertinent information, using a pad of paper and a pencil or pen. Some OBDII scanners give the code and a minor description of the problem area. Other scanners offer an entire definition of what the problem is with your vehicle.
